Conclusion

The empirical evidence from healthy subjects, some groups of patients as well as animal studies suggests that temporary systemic cooling can affect mood, fatigue, nociception and food intake. There also seems to be a substantial body of theoretical evidence for possible physiological mechanisms that are consistent with the observational studies. If some of the quality-of-life benefits that are discussed in the present review are confirmed by wider studies, this could lead to the development of an intervention that can improve two or more cancer-related symptoms in patients. While effective treatments for cancer pain and anorexia are presently available [1, 2], the management of fatigue and depression in cancer patients currently represents a significant challenge [1]. In particular, no effective interventions for cancer-related fatigue are currently available (except when fatigue is secondary to anemia or insomnia) and short-acting antidepressant therapies do not have a strong evidence base [1, 7]. At present, it is not known if repeated moderate cooling can be beneficial for cancer patients and further basic and clinical research in this area would be justified.
